An export platform is proven by evidence, and the third Mk1A squadron standing up was the evidence that mattered. Now the Tejas story enters its harder phase: a foreign briefing request has become a conversation about terms — and terms are where arms exports are actually won.
The pipeline runs up the roadmap. The Mk2's cleared engine-integration review extends the same confidence to the next-generation aircraft, giving a prospective buyer a reason to believe in the decade ahead rather than just the airframe on offer.
The negotiation is a game India is still learning. Sales at this scale increasingly turn on the credit lines, offset arrangements and co-production a supplier can offer alongside the hardware — the scaffolding that a near-neighbour weighs as heavily as the specifications. The order book is where this is decided.
The constraint remains delivery. An order book is a promise, and a supplier who slips a schedule converts a strategic relationship into a grievance faster than any adversary could. From inquiry to negotiation is real progress; from negotiation to delivery is the whole game. On our defence desk.
